For parents who want to save space and provide a comfortable sleeping space for their kids, setting up bunk beds is considered a great alternative. But for families that have tried bunk beds, it is almost always likely the bed ladder is the one that gives first. This is because more than the beds themselves, it is the ladder that serves as playthings for the kids, especially when they are in the mood for rough play. They are not as cheap as you would like them to be. So it is not advisable to throw them away when the ladder gets damaged. The solution? Replace the old ladder with a new one that you made yourself. Here's how to do it.
First, use a tape rule or tape measure to measure the height of the ladder, from the top of the bunk bed all the way down to the floor. Make sure your measurements are accurate to avoid wastage. Take two planks of wood, two inches by four inches in width and length, and cut them according to the height you just measured.

Second, take another two by four plank and cut this up to make rungs, each measuring one and one-half foot.
Third, secure the rungs onto the two longer pieces of wood using a bolt. Keep the rungs at a distance of about one foot from each other, but make sure that the fifth rung coincides with the top most part of the posts of the ladder.
Fourth, try on your ladder against the bunk beds to make sure that it is the right height before attaching it to the top of the bottom board. Make the necessary adjustments.
Fifth, take the top of the ladder sides, and mark an arc on them. Saw off the arched portion, and finish using sandpaper, stain and varnish.
Sixth, when it dries, secure the ladder by nailing it to the top base board of the uppermost bunk bed.
